  • Giant striped bass invaded Saco Bay last summer (2025) like I have never experienced before. Mackerel were plentiful throughout July, August, and September, and they were the preferred bait on most days. We started our season in May, fishing the herring run below Saco Island up in the Saco River estuary, and moved out to the beachfront for most of the summer, though we did have a few trips in July  up in the estuary where we wrestled with some giant stripers feeding on menhaden.

  • The offshore bite was steady out on Jeffrey's Ledge. We made the trip a half dozen times with steady results. Haddock, cod, and even amazing monkfish  were part of the catch. These 20 + mile jaunts for groundfishing are not for everyone, but the reward is always worth the effort. Whales, ocean sunfish (mola mola), and scavenger sharks are all part of the experience, plus the bonus of tasty fillets for a post-trip meal.

  •  Weather in Maine can be quite unpredictable and changes often occur quickly. Dense fog can turn to bluebird skies in a matter of minutes. Bring your beach wear and your rain gear! Maine weather can change in a moment. Most of our fishing trips feature near shore fishing within a few hundred yards of the coastal beaches and rocky shorelines, close to marauding seals, diving gulls, and interesting local sights like the Wood Island Lighthouse. Most trips include pulling lobster traps. I maintain five active traps. You keep any lobsters harvested. Please give Keeper Charters a try!    Capt. Marco
